Autistic as a term of abuse?

Is it OK to bandy around the word ‘autistic’?

That’s how the French Minister for Europe, Pierre Lellouche, described the UK Tory party’s approach to the EU. Well, for the record, no it isn’t.

Why? Hijacking words that describe physical or mental conditions to use as a term of abuse is never acceptable. It’s lazy, disrespectful and helps to engender negative images of those diagnosed with particular conditions.
